Death penalty for some for Egypt soccer violence

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian court has handed down death sentences for 21 people accused of taking part in soccer violence last year that killed 74.

In the courtroom, families of the deceased wailed in disbelief and raised their hands in the air shouting "Allahu Akbar", Arabic for God is great.

The judge said in his statement read live on state TV that he would announce the verdict for the remaining 52 defendants on March 9.

Among those on trial are nine security officials. The soccer melee on Feb. 1, 2011 between Port Said's Al-Masry fans and Cairo's Al-Ahly fans was the world's deadliest soccer violence in 15 years.

As is customary in Egypt, the death sentences will be sent to a top religious authority, the Grand Mufti, for approval.

Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates Endorses Chuck Hagel

Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates - who served under both George W. Bush and Barack Obama - has signed on to a letter with a bi-partisan group of 12 other former top national security officials expressing his "strong endorsement" of Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense.

The list also includes several top national security officials for Republican presidents: Brent Scrowcroft (Bush 41), Mel Laird (Nixon), George Schultz (Reagan), Colin Powell (Reagan, Bush 41 and Bush 43), Robert McFarlane (Reagan).

It's a pretty impressive list.

Here's the letter:

--Original Message--

Today, a distinguished group of former Secretaries of State, Defense, and National Security Advisors sent the following letter to the Members of the United States Senate to strongly endorse the nomination of Chuck Hagel to be Secretary of Defense.

###

January 24, 2013

To Members of the United States Senate:

We, as former Secretaries of State, Defense, and National Security Advisors, are writing to express our strong endorsement of Chuck Hagel to be the next Secretary of Defense.

Chuck Hagel has an impeccable record of public service that reflects leadership, integrity, and a keen reading of global dynamics. From his time as Deputy Veterans Administrator managing a quarter of a million employees during the Reagan presidency, to turning around the financially troubled World USO, to shepherding the post-9/11 GI Bill into law as a United States Senator, and most recently through his service on the Defense Policy Board at the Pentagon and as co-Chairman of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board, Chuck Hagel is uniquely qualified to meet the challenges facing the Department of Defense and our men and women in uniform. As President Obama noted in announcing the nomination, this twice-wounded combat veteran "is a champion of our troops and our veterans and our military families" and would have the distinction of being the first person of enlisted rank and the first Vietnam veteran to serve as Secretary of Defense.

His approach to national security and debates about the use of American power is marked by a disciplined habit of thoughtfulness that is sorely needed and these qualities will serve him well as Secretary of Defense at a time when the United States must address a range of international issues that are unprecedented in scope. Our extensive experience working with Senator Hagel over the years has left us confident that he has the necessary background to succeed in the job of leading the largest federal agency.

Hagel has declared that we "knew we needed the world's best military not because we wanted war but because we wanted to prevent war." For those of us honored to have served as members of a president's national security team, Senator Hagel clearly understands the essence and the burdens of leadership required of this high office. We hope this Committee and the U.S. Senate will promptly and favorably act on his nomination.

Sincerely,

Hon. Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State

Hon. Samuel Berger, former National Security Advisor

Hon. Harold Brown, former Secretary of Defense

Hon. Zbigniew Brzezinski, former National Security Advisor

Hon. William Cohen, former Secretary of Defense

Hon. Robert Gates, former Secretary of Defense

Hon. James Jones, former National Security Advisor

Hon. Melvin Laird, former Secretary of Defense

Hon. Robert McFarlane, former National Security Advisor

Hon. William Perry, former Secretary of Defense

Hon. Colin Powell, former Secretary of State and National Security Advisor

Hon. George Shultz, former Secretary of State

Hon. Brent Scowcroft, former National Security Advisor

Thawing 'dry ice' drives groovy action on Mars

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Researchers using NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter see seasonal changes on far-northern Martian sand dunes caused by warming of a winter blanket of frozen carbon dioxide.

Earth has no naturally frozen carbon dioxide, though pieces of manufactured carbon-dioxide ice, called "dry ice," sublime directly from solid to gas on Earth, just as the vast blankets of dry ice do on Mars. A driving factor in the springtime changes where seasonal coverings of dry ice form on Mars is that thawing occurs at the underside of the ice sheet, where it is in contact with dark ground being warmed by early-spring sunshine through translucent ice. The trapped gas builds up pressure and breaks out in various ways.

Transient grooves form on dunes when gas trapped under the ice blanket finds an escape point and whooshes out, carrying out sand with it. The expelled sand forms dark fans or streaks on top of the ice layer at first, but this evidence disappears with the seasonal ice, and summer winds erase most of the grooves in the dunes before the next winter. The grooves are smaller features than the gullies that earlier research linked to carbon-dioxide sublimation on steeper dune slopes.

Similar activity has been documented and explained previously where seasonal sheets of frozen carbon dioxide form and thaw near Mars' south pole. Details of the different northern seasonal changes are newly reported in a set of three papers for the journal Icarus. A video showing some of the changes is online at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/video/index.php?id=1184 .

The findings reinforce growing appreciation that Mars today, however different from its former self, is still a dynamic world, and however similar to Earth in some respects, displays some quite unearthly processes.

"It's an amazingly dynamic process," said Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute, Tucson. She is lead author of the first of the three new reports. "We had this old paradigm that all the action on Mars was billions of years ago. Thanks to the ability to monitor changes with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, one of the new paradigms is that Mars has many active processes today."

With three Martian years (six Earth years) of data in hand from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera, the researchers report on the sequence and variety of seasonal changes. The spring changes include outbursts of gas carrying sand, polygonal cracking of the winter ice blanketing the dunes, sandfalls down the faces of the dunes, and dark fans of sand propelled out onto the ice.

"It is a challenge to catch when and how those changes happen, they are so fast," said Ganna Portyankina of the University of Bern in Switzerland, lead author of the second report. "That's why only now we start to see the bigger picture that both hemispheres actually tell us similar stories."

The process of outrushing gas that carves grooves into the northern dunes resembles the process creating spider-shaped features in far southern Mars, as seen in an image at http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA12249, but the spiders have not been seen in the north. The seasonal dry-ice sheets overlie different types of terrain in the two hemispheres. In the south, diverse terrains include the flat, erodible ground where the spiders form, but in the north, a broad band of sand dunes encircles the permanent north polar ice cap.

Another difference is in brightening on parts of the ice-covered dunes. This brightening in the north results from the presence of water-ice frost, while in the south, similar brightening is caused by fresh carbon dioxide. The third paper of the Icarus set, by Antoine Pommerol of the University of Bern and co-authors, reports distribution of the water frost using the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM). The light water frost is blown around by spring winds.

The University of Arizona, Tucson, operates the HiRISE camera, which was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Boulder, Colo. The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, Md., provided and operates CRISM. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Denver, built the orbiter. For more about the mission, visit: http://www.nasa.gov/mro .

There's No Excuse for Bad Customer Service in 2013 | Business 2 ...

Theres No Excuse for Bad Customer Service in 2013 image easset upload file965 50059 e

Time Magazine recently ran an article about how 2013 could be the year that customer service improves ? at last!? (Could 2013 be the Year that Customer Service Gets Better?) The article implies a general ambivalence on the part of major companies and CEO?s who appear to be clueless about the importance of customer service.

I disagree with the idea that companies are oblivious to the customer service problem.? Instead, most companies I speak with are trying to tackle the problem, but struggle with making meaningful progress. The customer service problem crosses all departments within a company and depends on hundreds or thousands of people ? and often involves technology changes requiring process and metric changes.

When I talk to companies around the globe, I find that employees in sales, marketing, customer service, and the C-Suite certainly understand the importance of customer service and the ability of either good or bad customer service to impact their business. Individually, we have each had bad customer experiences, and we know their potential negative impact, but organizational policies and structures, legacy systems and general inertia get in the way.

Customer service extends beyond the contact center. We understand that it is important, and we have access to technologies that can help. What is missing with some companies is the top-down organizational imperative to improve customer service in a meaningful and sustainable way.? This is a journey ? although companies can have some quick wins, sustainable progress is measured over months and years, not days and weeks. Several trends are converging that give me hope that in 2013 customer service improvements will accelerate across the board ? for large companies and small.

Excuses do not work anymore with the rise of social media and mobility.
Customers know companies that provide great customer service and expect it from all of their suppliers.?And, they use social media like Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin or crowd sourcing applications like Yelp and Tripadvisor to tell their friends, family, and strangers when they have excellent customer service or bad customer service.? If a customer has a complaint, they now potentially tell thousands of people rather than perhaps five or ten as was the case just ten years ago.

Social media and mobility giving customers the instantaneous ability to give feedback is changing the way customers interact.?We cannot say that the technology is not there or that the product/service we are supporting is too complex. Cloud delivery means that powerful capabilities are now available to companies with lean (or no) IT organizations.?And, we have over 40 years of industry and contact center best practices to draw upon.?Customers simply will not accept those excuses any more ? and they are holding companies accountable in public forums.

Customer experience has C-level attention.
The C-suite now realizes that customer service can be a competitive differentiator rather than simply a cost center. A growing number of executives hold titles related to customer experience and customer success. Moreover, the C-suite understands that a direct correlation between customer satisfaction and revenue and profits exists.

It is true that you cannot manage that which you do not measure, so it is good news that metrics like Net Promoter Score (NPS) and Customer Effort Score (CES) are having more visibility at the highest levels of the organization.?See our recent blog post on Three Things Every Company Should Track.?With high-level focus on these metrics, organizations are gaining the executive mandate to address structural and process barriers that are getting in the way of a great customer experience.

Innovative technologies are rapidly changing the customer service landscape.
Mobility, the cloud, big data and social media are just a few of the technologies that are reshaping the customer service landscape. Customers with smart phones and tablets would rather use these devices to interact than a desktop system and a land line.?Customers expect the same type of experience whether they go to a retail store, call a contact center, Tweet a customer service complaint, or e-mail a company.?The good news is that the technologies exist to offer one seamless conversation across all different customer touch points. It is, however, more difficult to rally a company behind the customer service mantra, ensure all the processes are in place to deal with customers consistently, and give customers quick, fast, efficient resolution to their issues.

See our recent blog post on the mobile opportunity in customer service for an illustration of the rise of different channels.??Companies cannot afford to neglect these capabilities ? again, the success of the leading companies will put continued pressure on the rest to keep pace.

A watershed year?
I do believe that there will be continued progress in 2013 on customer service and that more and more companies are making customer service a key part of their strategy.?I am optimistic that companies will realize that bad customer service is too big a business liability and excellent customer service is a valuable differentiator. And, I?m looking forward to seeing the ways that innovative companies will find to forge new customer relationships through great customer service.

Apple Sold 2M Apple TVs In The Holiday Quarter, Up 60% From A Year Ago

apple tvApple announced on its earnings call today that the company sold more than 2 million Apple TV devices in its fiscal first quarter. That’s up from 1.3 million sequentially, and up from 1.4 million during the previous holiday period. Altogether, that means Apple has sold more than 10 million Apple TV units over the years, making it one of the most popular streaming devices out there. The growth in Apple TV sales shows continued demand for an understated device that is now five years old. It also comes as users and analysts alike continue to wait for Apple to produce an actual TV. For years, prognosticators have forecast Apple would get into the HDTV market. But with no real timeline for building its software into a streaming display, its streaming box continues to sell well. In many ways, it’s strategy seems smart now: Connected TV adoption hasn’t been as great as some may have expected, but the market set-top boxes continues to grow. Take a look at Google TV, for example: While it launched with Sony producing actually TVs a few years ago, nowadays most of the takeup for device running the OS seems to be coming in the form of boxes produced by the likes of Vizio, Netgear, HiSense, and others. And, at least for now, Apple seems to be the market leader. But that doesn’t mean Apple can’t do more. On the earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company was exploring new ways to distribute video content in the living room. “I tend to believe that there’s a lot that we can contribute in this space and so we continue to pull the string and see where it leads us,” Cook said. “But I don’t want to be more specific.” Rather than build more smarts into the device, the company continues to connect it to other devices that leverage AirPlay and can stream or navigate content that can be displayed on the box. Last summer Apple added AirPlay mirroring to computers running OSX Mountain Lion. It’s also added better support for developers who wish to build dual-screen apps that leverage their iPhones or iPads for control of the Apple TV.

2013 Farmers Insurance Open: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson ...

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson lead a talent-laden field into Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

Tiger Woods? run at his eighth win as a professional at Torrey Pines -- and first since his monumental playoff win over Rocco Mediate in the 2008 U.S. Open -- tops the list of storylines for this week's tour stop near Phil Mickelson's San Diego hometown.

Runner-up would be Kyle Stanley?s 72nd-hole meltdown at last year?s contest. Stanley?s triple bogey on his final hole in regulation opened the door for Brandt Snedeker, who, with a win on the second playoff hole, posted his first of two victories in 2012 on his way to earning the FedEx Cup title.

Farmers Insurance Open preview:

• Dates: January 24 - January 27
• Courses: 7,698-yard, par-72 Torrey Pines Golf Course (South) and 7,045-yard, par-72 Torrey Pines North. Participants play both courses Thursday and Friday, with those making the 36-hole cut teeing it up on the South Course over the weekend
• Field: 156 players, including five of the world's top 20

Other A-listers include reigning Masters champ Bubba Watson and Keegan Bradley
• Of note: Tiger Woods (1999) and George Burns (1987) hold the 72-hole course record of 266, while Woods (third round 1999) owns the 18-hole record on the South Course (62), and Mark Brooks (second round 1990) and Snedeker (first round, 2007) posted 61s to record the 18-hole record on Torrey Pines North

7 Days To Change Your Life | O3 Health And Fitness - Asheville ...

The Real Food Challenge

Processed foods, additives and chemicals are inferior to real food and are potentially harmful to your health.
So why do you still eat it?
Why do you still eat that packaged granola bar and snack on those whole grain crackers? You may think that heart healthy label means something, but it doesn?t hold a candle to real food.
What is Real Food?
Here?s an easy way to tell if your food is real or not: If your food can go bad, it?s good for you. If your food can?t go bad, it?s bad for you.
Real food is fresh and unprocessed.
The Real Food Challenge
This real food challenge has the potential to change your body forever. Take the next 7 days to ONLY eat real food. One week is a very short time in the grand scheme of things, and I know you can do this.
Just try it for one week to see and feel the difference in your body.
The Rules
During the next 7 days you will avoid eating all of the following food items:

• Bread
• Grains
• Rice
• Crackers & Chips
• Packaged snacks
• Sugar & Corn Syrup
• Soda Pop
• Packaged Bars
• Baked Goods
• Candy

Here?s a list of the real foods that you will eat instead:

• Seasonal, organic Vegetables
• Seasonal, organic Fruits
• Lean, organic meat, fish & eggs
• Nuts and Seeds

Those four categories of food can be combined into endless, flavorful combinations. Check out the following meal ideas:

Breakfast:Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. What you decide to eat when you first wake up will set the tone for the rest of your meals that day.

• Scrambled organic eggs, sliced tomato and a handful of seasonal berries.
• Half of a dressed avocado and a few slices of nitrate-free bacon.
• Pancakes made with coconut flour and topped with chopped nuts.

Lunch: ??Plan your lunch ahead of time in order to avoid turning to a fast food joint or vending machine. Pack your lunch the night before and carry it with you.

• Dark baby greens topped with chopped chicken breast and diced tomatoes.
• Albacore tuna (packed in water), mixed with finely chopped cucumber over cauliflower rice. (See recipe below)
• Turkey and Spinach Salad

Dinner: ??Dinner is the meal where most people splurge and eat far more calories than they should. Eating at home is the first step in reducing your dinnertime calories.

• Grilled white fish, saut?ed spinach and almond bread.
• Baked chicken breast with steamed broccoli and quinoa.
• A big bowl of arugula topped with saut?ed asparagus and sliced hardboiled eggs.

While healthy eating is a huge factor in achieving your ideal weight, exercise is the other (very important) half of the equation.
Your exercise routine should be challenging and should be done on a regular basis.

Just 7 Days

How quickly does a week fly by? Pretty fast, right?
When you decide to eat only real food for 7 days you will be amazed at the positive improvement that you feel and see in your body.
Do this challenge for yourself.
In one short week you could be in the same, worse, or you could be leaner and excited.
The choice is yours.

Grain-Free Rice

Just because you?re giving your body a break from grains this week doesn?t mean your dinner will be rice-less. Fresh, organic cauliflower makes the perfect base for grain-free rice. Serve with a side of lean meat and a fresh garden salad for a low carb, real food meal. Servings: 4

Here?s what you need?

• 1 head organic cauliflower
• 1 Tablespoon coconut oil
• Salt and pepper
1. Wash cauliflower, discard the leaves, and chop into small pieces. Grate the pieces with a food processor.
2. In a large skillet heat the coconut oil over medium. Add the shredded cauliflower. Saut? for about 5 minutes, until tender. Season with salt and pepper. Serve as you would traditional rice.

Nutritional Analysis: One serving equals: 66 calories, 3g fat, 87mg sodium, 7g carbohydrate, 4g fiber, and 3g protein

13 Things to Watch for in Oil & Gas in 2013 - Warren Business ...

As we enter the New Year we can expect 2013 to be rich with news flow for the oil and gas industry.? But what news should we seek out and what will be the main trends and prospects in 2013?? Here I identify 13 things to watch in 2013.? Each of them has the potential to have a significant impact on our industry in their own right.

Please feel free to leave a note on your thoughts for 2013 in the comments section.

1.? Unconventional oil in the U.S.:? the IEAs World Energy Outlook calls for surge in U.S. oil production, driven largely by developments in tight oil.? The IEA predicts that by 2020 the U.S. will become the world?s largest oil producer, and may even export by 2030.? The short term impact will be to depress U.S. oil prices ? WTI is already trading at a discount to Brent and oil exports are not permitted by law.? Much of this new oil production carries associated gas which would put further pressure on already depressed U.S. gas prices.

2.? Oil supplies from Iraq:? as Iraq continues to revitalise its oil sector the focus will be on how close it gets to reaching its ambitious production target of 12mmbd by 2017.? Iraq benefits from huge resources and low production costs, but challenges remain.? Key news flow in 2013 includes:? (i)? the passage of the draft Hydrocarbon Law; (ii) relations between Baghdad and foreign investors, especially those seeking to also invest in the Kurdistan Region; and (iii)? exports from the Kurdistan Region, initially by truck and then pipeline, if agreement is reached with Turkey.

3.? The world economy:? oil demand is linked strongly to economic growth.? 2012 saw lower growth in China, India and Brazil and uncertainty surrounds the handling of the ?fiscal cliff? in the U.S. and the Euro crisis.? The impact of austerity measures in the U.S. and in the E.U. will negatively impact economic growth and therefore will be a drag on oil price.? Oil markets are likely to remain highly sensitive to economic growth indicators through 2013.

4.? Hydrates technology:? Japan has been leading studies since 1995 into production of natural gas from hydrate resources.? They are to do the world?s first production test from hydrates in 2013.? These hydrates are found in deep water and present a huge resource.? The gas hydrate resource is bigger than all the oil, gas and coal conventional reserves available today.

5.? A weakening U.S. dollar:? long-time observers of oil price note that as the U.S. dollar weakens the oil price (expressed in dollars per barrel) almost always goes up.? 2012 saw relative dollar weakness and we watch to see how the U.S. government?s and law makers? efforts to manage the fiscal cliff impact sentiment towards the dollar.

6.? Shale gas in China:? Shale gas could have a much bigger impact in China than in the U.S.? China?s resources are potentially much bigger than those in the U.S., according to U.S. Geological Survey.? The problem is that China needs outside help (such as that provided by current joint venture partners BP and Shell) to better understand the potential and to exploit the resource. ?A further issue is that much of the shale gas is located in the desert and water supply for fracking operations is challenging.? If international technology is applied successfully, 2013 could see China make significant strides in realising its shale gas potential.

7.? Small cap. E&P stocks:? 2012 was poor for small cap. E&P and investors will be seeking better in 2013.? Slowly the environment is turning more favourable and we have seen a return of risk appetite in the market.? Many analysts now talk of ?The Great Rotation? which calls for a move back into equities generally.? The environment is ripe for E&P consolidation due to high growth in emerging markets and strategies to expand geographic reach, particularly by large companies seeking growth.? The North Sea is a case in point: ?smaller companies may combine to provide the scale and resources (particularly cash) that projects in the region typically require.

8.? LNG as a transportation fuel:? Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has penetrated the transportation market much more deeply and much more quickly than anyone had anticipated.? The next push is in developing bunkering to allow for greater use of LNG as a fuel for shipping.? Bunkering could double global LNG consumption in 10 years.? The U.S. has just put down orders for two LNG fuelled container ships and is investigating new LNG bunkering facilities.? China?s Yellow River ships have already been converted to LNG, as have Shell?s ships on the Rhine.

9.? Super-major growth prospects:? many have noted for some time that the super-majors have been struggling to grow, with year on year production declines and reserves replacement at less than 100% typical.? Consequently, these companies have shown poor investment performance, with declining PE ratios and declining price to book values relative to the market.? There are also concerns about dividend growth.? The investment case for super-majors is not clear and this debate is set to become main stream in 2013.

10.? Increased refining capacity:? Asian refining capacity is ramping up ? new capacity of 750mbd (mostly in China) is expected in early 2013 and a total of 2.4mmbd is expected to be added to global refining capacity by the end of 2013.? If this capacity translates into demand for oil then this will lead to significant support for oil prices.? Observers will be watching these projects carefully.

11. The Middle East and Geopolitics:? To date the focus of oil markets has been on the so-called Arab Spring, with supply concerns from countries such as Libya, Egypt and Syria.? While the Arab Spring is likely to remain at the forefront of traders? minds in the short term, it?s Iran?s external relations that have the greatest potential to upset markets.? U.S. sanctions on Iran are set to intensify in 2013.? The clamour for clarification from Iran over its nuclear ambitions will grow and the country will come under increased scrutiny.? This issue is likely to rise quickly to the top of Barack Obama?s foreign policy agenda.

12.? Service companies? business model:? capital spending is increasing and industry inflation is growing.? Such conditions usually mean higher margins for service companies, but this is not guaranteed.? Labour shortages, equipment over-supply, tighter regulations, aggressive customers and increasing input prices are applying downward pressure to profits.? Many service companies are turning to direct investments in oil and gas projects.? They hope that broadening their business model will improve growth prospects.

13.? Environment and renewables:? sustained up to now by government subsidies, growth in renewables will come under pressure as governments fight to reduce their debt.? As the government debt crises has escalated the environment has fallen down the political agenda.? The public too is seeking to cut back subsidies to renewables. ?That is true in both the U.K. and Germany ? both leaders on the environment.

What oil and gas themes will you be following in 2013?? Please leave your comments at the end of this article.

UN urges focus on North Korea human rights record

GENEVA (AP) ? The U.N.'s top human rights official said Monday that as many as 200,000 people are being held in North Korean political prison camps rife with torture, rape and slave labor, and that some of the abuses may amount to crimes against humanity.

For that reason, said Navi Pillay, the world body's high commissioner for human rights, nations must mount an independent probe into North Korea's human rights record.

The U.N. Human Rights Council and the U.N. General Assembly, which includes all 193 member nations, have condemned North Korea's human rights record, but Pillay said stronger action is needed, including such a probe ? one authorized by the United Nations but performed by experts independent of the U.N. system.

The stinging criticism and call from the world body's top human rights official for "a full-fledged international inquiry into serious crimes" in North Korea comes a year after Kim Jong Un became the new leader of the nuclear-armed Asian country upon the death of his father.

"There were some initial hopes that the advent of a new leader might bring about some positive change in the human rights situation," Pillay said. "But a year after Kim Jong Un became the country's new supreme leader we see almost no sign of improvement."

Pillay's statement was based on extensive research submitted by a special investigator for the 47-nation Human Rights Council based in Geneva and meetings that she held there in December with two survivors of the prison camps, said Pillay's spokesman, Rupert Colville.

A U.N. report in September by special rapporteur Marzuki Darusman said some 150,000 to 200,000 people are estimated to be imprisoned in six North Korean camps for alleged political crimes. Pillay said she found "their personal stories were extremely harrowing" after meeting with the two survivors.

"They described a system that represents the very antithesis of international human rights norms. We know so little about these camps, and what we do know comes largely from the relatively few refugees who have managed to escape from the country," Pillay said. "The highly developed system of international human rights protection that has had at least some positive impact in almost every country in the world, seems to have completely bypassed" North Korea.

She said the camp system involves "rampant violations, including torture and other forms of cruel and inhumane treatment, summary executions, rape, slave labor, and forms of collective punishment that may amount to crimes against humanity." Living conditions are reported to include scarce food, little to no medical care and inadequate clothing.

"One mother described to me how she had wrapped her baby in leaves when it was born, and later made her a blanket by sewing together old socks," Pillay said.

While the world's focus remains on North Korea's nuclear program and its rocket launches, Pillay said, those important issues "should not be allowed to overshadow the deplorable human rights situation ... which in one way or another affects almost the entire population and has no parallel anywhere else in the world."

Pillay said North Korea also has used the death penalty to punish minor offenses and abducted South Korean and Japanese nationals over the years.

North Korea's mission to the United Nations in Geneva, which was given a copy of the report before its publication Monday, did not have an immediate public response to it.

McGOVERN: Delone grad to get NCAA award

Borden

The plan was for Dave Borden to call Wednesday evening, after 7, on his way home from work, which he did, except that work was actually school.

Borden, a captain in the Marine Corps, is enrolled at the Expeditionary Warfare School (EWS), located in Quantico, Va.

In case you're wondering, as I was, EWS is a "nine-month course providing career-level professional military education, with emphasis on combined arms operations, warfighting skills, tactical decision-making and Marine Air Ground Task Forces in amphibious operations."

So never having spoken to Borden and relying on stereotypes, part of me was expecting the gruff, no-nonsense, all-business type, who spoke in sentences that ended abruptly and were as short as his haircut.

Well, Borden, a 2003 Kutztown University grad who played wide receiver for the Golden Bears, isn't that guy. He was just the opposite: engaging and sincere, easygoing and self-deprecating. He was also just a tad bit confused.

Friday night, as part of the annual NCAA Honors Celebration in Grapevine, Texas, Borden will receive the NCAA Inspiration Award, "presented to a coach or administrator, or a current or former varsity letter winner at an NCAA institution, (who) when confronted with a life-altering situation, used perseverance, dedication and determination to overcome the event. This person now serves as a role model to give hope and inspiration to others in similar situations. It is not presented automatically on an annual basis."

Pretty heady stuff.

Borden was unaware the award existed until notified he was receiving it. And that's when the confusion set in.

"I'm absolutely honored to receive this award, but, honestly, I don't know why they picked me," he said. "I still think they got the wrong dude."

I'm guessing you'll think otherwise.

?---

When Dave Borden graduated from Delone Catholic in 1999, he wasn't rubber-stamped for football greatness.

Not heavily recruited, he got a scholarship to Kutztown, where he had a solid career, catching 45 passes for 617 yards and six touchdowns over four seasons.

He graduated with a double major in finance and marketing and got a job with Cintas Corporation in its management training program, only to realize he longed for a career path less traveled.

So he joined the Marines.

"I always thought about being part of something bigger than myself, such as the military," said Borden, now 31. "Anybody that joins the military, I truthfully believe it's a calling to a higher purpose.

"To represent your country and the Constitution of the United States, that's a calling."

Borden answered.

In January 2006 he entered Marine Corps Officer Candidate School, graduating as a second lieutenant and becoming a rifle platoon commander, in charge of about 40 Marines.

Borden and his unit were deployed to Ramadi, Iraq, in September 2007. Their mission was to increase security and safety, which makes what happened four months later cruelly ironic.

Borden was gravely injured by a suicide bomb. His body was ravaged: right arm, broken; left arm, shattered; right femur, broken; lung, collapsed; bladder, ruptured; right foot, gone.

His spirit, though, proved it could take a punch -- or how about 150 punches, one for each of the ball bearings doctors estimated were embedded in Borden's body from the blast.

His recovery was equal parts agonizing and excruciating. He went through 40 surgeries, overcame infection and had his right leg amputated above the knee. Simple tasks -- walking, standing, sitting up -- had to be relearned.

But through it all, there was one constant, one goal always in the forefront, driving him, motivating him: Hard as it is to believe, Borden wanted to return to active duty.

"People would say: 'Are you OK? What's wrong with you?'" he said. "But when you put so much time and effort into something, and it's taken away, being injured left me with a void. And for me, the only way to fix that void was to continue serving. I would not have been able to move forward without being a Marine. Filling that void was necessary for me."

Jan. 19, 2011 -- three years to the day after that suicide bomber nearly committed homicide -- Dave Borden, outfitted with a prosthetic right leg, got his wish: He was redeployed to Afghanistan, where he remained until January 2012. He's been enrolled in EWS since August -- hoping for another trip to the "combat theater."

"I'd love to be able to deploy again," he said.

?---

Sports, a "big part" of Dave Borden's life, taught him lessons about teamwork, sacrifice and working toward a common goal.

Even more important, they allowed him to forge friendships that have helped him cope with and overcome an ordeal that most of us can't begin to imagine.

"That's what stands out to me about Kutztown," Borden said. "I have a lot of long-lasting relationships among professors, the president of the university, the coaching staff, my teammates they've all helped support me."

In addition to his service, as if that weren't enough, what Borden has provided in return -- and not just to the university community, but to anyone who knows his story -- is an example of courage and character that makes it clear why he's being honored with the NCAA Inspiration Award.

But he's uncomfortable being held up as a role model or a hero.

"With all due respect, I understand when people try to say I'm a hero," Borden said. "But to me, that's reserved for the men and women who make the ultimate sacrifice. So, no, I don't consider myself a hero."

I have a feeling I'm not the only one who would respectfully disagree.

Lakers snap NBA losing streak

The Los Angeles Lakers celebrated Dwight Howard's return from injury on Sunday with a 113-93 NBA victory over Cleveland that ended their worst losing streak in six years.

Howard, who was sidelined for three games with a right shoulder injury, scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Lakers ended a six-game slide.

The Lakers hadn't lost six in a row since a seven-game losing streak in 2007.

Howard connected on nine of 11 shots from the field. Kobe Bryant led all scorers with 23 points and six assists, and played a key role in limiting prolific Cleveland point guard Kyrie Irving, who scored 15 points with seven assists.

"That was a challenge I wanted to accept for sure," Bryant said. "I tried to pressure Kyrie and force someone else to initiate the offence."

Bryant said improved defence overall was key for a Lakers team that had surrendered more than 100 points in each of their past six games.

The Cavaliers, whose 9-29 record coming into the contest was the second-worst in the league, appeared to offer a good opportunity to end the skid, but they had shocked the Lakers in Cleveland in December.

"Defensively we were very active, trying to take them out of their sets," Bryant said. "I think our defensive intelligence tonight was pretty good."

Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said the return of Howard was part of the improvement on the defensive end, along with the solid play of Earl Clark, who was making his second start as Pau Gasol remained sidelined because of a concussion.

"It's a baby step, but it's a step," D'Antoni said.

Elsewhere, Kevin Durant dropped in 33 points, Russell Westbrook had 18 with nine assists and the league-best Oklahoma City Thunder (29-8) ended Portland's nine-game home winning streak, 87-83.

LaMarcus Aldridge had 33 points and 11 boards but missed a potential game-tying jumper with one second left for Portland, losers of two straight following a four-game game winning streak.

New York Knicks defeated New Orleans Hornets 100-87, Brooklyn down Indiana 97-86 and the Milwaukee Bucks prevailed 107-96 over the Toronto Raptors.

San Antonio had a 106-88 win over Minnesota while the Denver Nuggets beat Golden State Warriors 116-105.
